Best of Enemies

David Harewood and Zachary Quinto star in Best of Enemies, James Graham’s extraordinarily powerful play about political wrangling on TV in the USA during 1968, one of the most turbulent years in the nation’s history. It won the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Best New Theatre Production and the Critics Circle Theatre Award for Best New Play, also nominated for two Olivier Awards. Now it’s being brought to the West End’s Noel Coward Theatre thanks to Second Half Productions, Eleanor Lloyd Productions, Wessex Grove, the Young Vic Theatre and Headlong. Wagner Johnson Productions is the Executive Producer.

1968 saw the USA experiencing an unprecedented year of protests. Two media giants, the conservative William F. Buckley Junior and his direct opposite, the liberal Gore Vidal, battled fiercely in parallel with the election battle for the Presidency. Beliefs were challenged and slurs exchanged as the two media stars fought night after night on TV, debating the moral landscape of a country in crisis. They had no idea they were about to change American politics and way it was represented on TV forever. Don’t miss this brilliant political drama.

A masterpiece in acting and production
Not only are the star actors worth their weight in gold and talent (which goes without saying) but every performer on stage bright theor character to life and will stay on in memory. A special note is due to the production team for an innovative set-up and change of sets. They bring the subtlety and old world charm to the play. Finally, you know the leading actors are powerhouse performers when they can hold your attention with the barest of props. A must watch!

Fascinating and stimulating
I didn’t know anything about the story beforehand but I really enjoyed the play. It was involving, full of ideas and great fun.

Great acting and storyline
The acting is very good. The storyline is very good however too much swearing. I was very uncomfortable for this reason I will not recommend it.

Poignant
Wasn’t really sure what to expect, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Entertaining, whilst also thought provoking.

Compelling, relevant and powerful !!
This is a riveting, brilliantly written play set in 1968 when William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal participate in a series of debates which cogently articulate and synthesize the political underpinnings of the current chasm between liberal and conservative movements in the US .. The acting was sensational as was the staging . As an American, it was particularly powerful to be thrown back into that turbulent time in US history and to simultaneously shutter in recognition of how prophetic the warnings about the destruction of the soul of our country are given the criminality of D trump ,Jan 6 insurrection and the siloed media that enables our citizens to live in disparate realities. This is a must see play!!

The swinging sixties from a different angle. Must see
Attention- one star for the music prior to the show. Annoying choice of music, far too loud. And : unnecessary.
