The 1950 Hollywood movie, starring Bette Davis and Ann Baxter, was a runaway hit and a darling of the critics. It remains one of the top US movies, with a coveted place in the US National Film Registry and one of the first 50 films they registered. Now it's back, starring Gillian Anderson and Lily James. The West End premiere takes place during February 2019 and the plot has been adapted for the stage by the wonderful Ivo van Hove, the Belgian director with a reputation for super-modern, quirky treatments.
The music is from the exceptionally amazing musician PJ Harvey, winner of an Ivor Novello, two Mercuries, 8 Brits and 7 Grammys. She also has an MBE for services to music. Gillian Anderson made her stage debut on Broadway in 1991 as Evelyn in Alan Ayckbourn’s play, Absent Friends. Lily James made her stage debut in 2011 as Taylor in Vernon God Little at the Young Vic. Monica Dolan is probably best known for her brilliantly funny role in TV's self-referencing comedy series W1A, and she plays Margo's bestie Karen, and last but far from least Sheila Reid plays Margo's long-suffering maid, Birdie. What happens when an ambitious young actress gradually takes over her idol's life? Come and see.
